onionBoy_btwihateonions Second time I'm buying this, mainly because I wanted a DRM-Free copy, but also because Jim is a talented musician and I wanted to support him.

Noplace Like Nowhere is a master-stroke in folksy sillyness. The songs on here are catchy, even as a couple dabble in more melancholy than humor. The peak of it all is Stress, an endlessly listenable classic that's just as resonant now as it was 20 yrs ago.

Best folk album I've heard since Jim Guthrie's Now More Than Ever. Favorite track: Stress.

Stress 04:13
I'm addicted to stress that's the way that I get things done if I'm not under pressure then I sleep too long and I hang around like a bum and I think I'm going nowhere and that makes me nervous Everybody's out to get me but I feel alright, everybody's out to get me but I feel alright, everybody's out to get me but I feel alright, everybody's thinking about me. It's the little things that get you it's the little things that get you, it's the little things that get you when you weren't paying attention, It's the little things that get you it's the little things that get you, it's the little things that get you when you weren't paying attention. I'm trying to cut down on my caffeine consumption so when I get up I just have one cup of coffee and I like to have another cup of coffee with my breakfast and when I go to work I like to get a cup of coffee like the kind of cup of coffee that you get with a doughnut 'cept I never get the doughnut I just get the cup of coffee and when I get to work I like to have a cup of coffee ' cause I like to have a coffee when I'm talking on the phone but It usually goes cold and I need to get another cup of coffee and it's lunch and I have an espresso. And when I get back it's not morning anymore so I have a diet cola and another diet cola and by then I'm feeling fine and I'm feeling pretty sharp and I'm feeling pretty wired and I'm getting things done, but right about two I get this little tiny migraine and it starts behind my eyes and it moves to the back of my neck and it moves to the bottom of my spine but it doesn't get there until five or six o'clock which is the end of the day so I'm fine so I'm fine so I'm fine so I'm fine, except when I have to work late when I have to work late which I usuallydo. I love to work I love to run I love to play real hard I love to steal little things from the grocery store like a piece of bubble gum or sometimes I just stick my thumb in a peachand leave it there. I love to work I love to run I love to waterski, snowboard, jetski, skydive, parasail, hang-glide, rollerblade, mountainbike, bungy-jump, well I mean I'd love to do theses things if I ever had the time, I love to work I love to work, I love to work out after work, I love to spend a little time with this woman that I'm seeing 'cept we never really get a little time to spend together so we call each other up and we talk about work. But what I think I'd really love is to get out by myself on a little tiny island in the middle of the ocean with just me and a book and a cellular phone and a personal computer incase something came up and I'd eat and I'd drink and I'd run and I'd sleep and I wouldn't do nothing except swim all day 'cept my beeper doesn't work under water, where are the sharks? where are the sharks? and there's this kind of anemone that sticks in your foot and the poison goes up to your brain and you die and sand fleas? sand fleas - yuck! but actually I think it'd be really relaxing just me by myself in the middle of the ocean and that's what I'd really love to do more than anything else except I'd probably hate it.

Concrete 02:58
I waited in the park but you didn't show I wanted you to say but you didn't know it was okay you were so sweet and you're wrapped around my feet like concrete It was late, I couldn't sleep so I took a walk I walked up to your door but I didn't knock I didn't know who I was going to meet and was that you with him in the street and you're wrapped around my feet like concrete and you're wrapped around my feet like concrete and you're wrapped around my feet like concrete and it's you and it's you and it's you and it's you and it's sinking in, and it's you and it's you and it you and it's you that I'm sticking to. We could drive by the river in your silver car just to hear the tires humming on the tar and then make a fire in the back seat if I wasn't afraid of sinking too deep and I see fishes in my sleep and you're wrapped around my feet like concrete and you're wrapped around my feet like concrete and you're wrapped around my feet like concrete and it's you and it's you and it's you and it's you and it's sinking in, and it's you and it's you and it you and it's you that I'm sticking to. and it's you and it's you and it's you and it's you and it's sinking in, and it's you and it's you and it you and it's you that I'm sticking to.

Bad things happen to the kindest people God and the Devil are kind of hard to tell apart and I feel like my soul's been crippled slowly after the tornado when everything is wrong and everything means nothing in this bright green desert these miles of phone lines this line of skinny trees and I feel like my soul's been crippled slowly under the grist mill when everything is wrong can't fly anymore - I've forgotten my wings can't fly anymore - it's like I don't know how can't fly anymore - and I can't rise above and leave myself behind me I've grown roots in my own body my mother loved me my father loved me but I was always hungry it was never enough and I feel like my soul's been crippled slowly after the tornado when everything is wrong when everything is wrong

I think you better cut all that hair off throw it out the window climb down from that tower flip the wicked witch the finger ain't no use to wait for him to get you he's out chasing his own demons not like you can really blame him you've got demons of your own and I hate to be the one to tell you cause it don't seem so romantic but that's the way it really goes and now you know you're gonna have to be your own prince charming gonna have to ride your own stallion gonna have to find your own castle gonna have to raise your own sail and there's gonna be a happy ending but that's only the beginning this ain't no fairy tale it's true it's real it's you Cinderella stepped out of her glass slippers threw down that new apron put on a pair of old Doc Martens and stomped right out the door the prince was still chewing on his bacon as he hit the open road said life is full enough of disappointment to go kissing any toad and somewhere a band was playing "to-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra" you go out and see the world girl have yourself a ball you're gonna have to be your own prince charming gonna have to ride your own stallion gonna have to find your own castle gonna have to raise your own sail and there's gonna be a happy ending but that's only the beginning this ain't no fairy tale you're gonna have to be your own prince charming gonna have to ride your own stallion gonna have to find your own castle gonna have to raise your own sword and there's gonna be a happy ending and there's gonna be a happy ending and there's gonna be a happy ending it's true it's real it's you

Angry white guy biting the bullet biting his tongue biding his time ringing the bell stacking the deck throwing the curve drawing the line all things being equal all things being equal all things being equal they're not Angry white guy pounding the beat pounding the man beating the rap digging the ditch digging it deep releasing the dogs springing the trap all things being equal all things being equal all things being equal they're not After all isn't God an angry white guy? angry white guy angry white guy After digging the gig at the pig we go hit the shindig out in the burb-claves where the homes are big and we're mixing it up and we're dancing it up and a cocktail a cocktail I'm laughing it up cause everyone there's just a little bit tight and everybody's white and they're leaning to the right and that's when I hear you talking this shite about those people in the ghetto how they ain't living right how they're LAZY down on the scary side of town how it's their own damn fault how they keep THEMSELVES down and my wide smile became a frown and I had to slip up your trip and lay it down. This is a land of opportunity not a land of charity and those who have immunity wanna broaden this disparity do you hear me clearly - got some question about my clarity am I too light to be so pious - too white for this analogy? well the great reverend so and so I know I'm not but I recognize all the breaks that I got cause my skin gets me in and my skin gets me by and my skin helps me win and I don't have to wonder why there are some people who have to grow up so much harder than I do and If I grew up in the project things might not be so cool no matter how hard I worked, no matter how much I did to keep my language and color and heritage hid so you ROLL up your windows and pretend that you don't see them then you LECTURE us all on equality and freedom how I wish a dark skin would grow all over YOU we'd see who's got the same opportunity as who All things being equal all things being equal all things being equal they're not After all isn't God an angry white guy?

Los Angeles 04:58
We drive crazy although we know the smoke is killing us because we like to go that way the 405 to the 10 into Los Angeles the meter's on - the freeway into heaven LA - we're bound away Years ago my great great Aunt Boo drove a yellow Ford with her husband George from Signal Hill to Malibu you had to be crazy to live here then long gone to Standard Oil Mulholland and the Market Crash Los Angeles the meter's on the - freeway into heaven LA - we're bound away Before George and Boo lost everything in '29 and he left her for a speakeasy girl on Olivera Street crazy how things can change before he called out for her near his death and she came to hold him in her arms before before before the oil this place once was a desert... Someday I may be some great great something to someone and will that child be dreaming about me and that great brave space that was crazy before it changed before it changed before it changed Los Angeles the meter's on - the freeway into heaven LA - we're bound away...

Boston Band 03:43
We're a local Boston Band another local Boston Band another local *bleep*ing Boston *bleep*ing Band and we're here to rock your world and we're here to get you laid and we're here to make you boogie all night long and we're here and we're here and we're here and we're here My friend Kate says she wants to be a big rock star and her parents just don't understand they spent a lot of money on her college education and they'd really like to see some results but Kate's got this big fire inside you should see how it burns her up when something forces you out in front of strangers to sing it's as powerful as any love and we're a local Boston Band another local Boston Band another local *bleep*ing Boston *bleep*ing Band and we're here to help sell beer and we're here to fill this club and we're here to make you wanna buy our disc and we're here and we're here and we're here and we're here My friend Bill says that the Boston Music scene is like two snakes trying to strangle each other to death as soon as one snake tries to come out of his hole the other one tightens its grip and I like that image but I'd rather live here than in New York or Nashville or LA because there's ten thousand writers with axes to grind and you won't find that in just any old place and we're a local Boston Band another local Boston Band another local *bleep*ing Boston *bleep*ing Band and we're here away from home we call our girls up on the phone and they say "hey - how's it goin'" and they're there and we're here so drink up cause we're here yeah have fun cause we're here shake that thing! cause we're here!

She's Dead 03:53
I really liked her but she's dead and that really kinda blows I would have liked to kiss her head her cheek and chin and eyes and nose and if she woulda stuck around I think we coulda had some fun maybe found a little joy maybe some seasons in the sun But now she's dead and that's okay at some point everybody dies and though her life was kinda short (by the standards of today) it woulda been long in medieval times. I really liked her but she's dead although I don't know how she died one guy told me it was junk but someone else said that he lied Another person said that she cut her own head off with a knife I think that would have been too hard not the best way to end your life But now she's dead and we are not she's made it to the other side I bet Jim Morrisson is there (and Kurt and Jerry and Sid and Spot) and other people who have died I really liked her but she's dead at least I figure that's the case I haven't seen her since she left and no one else has seen her face So she might still be alive or gone around the world to roam but to me she'll still be dead until she calls me on the phone.

Stay In Love 04:20
If you could have time but no money money, but no time which one would you choose if you think that you're the loser you're the winner and if you say you have to win, you lose If you could have pride but no lover a lover but no pride which one would it be caught between the sweet life and nefarious necessity well we're gonna take some time until we get enough you and I we're gonna stay in love Why say no when you can say yes more is better most is best why say no when you can say yes more is less and we're gonna take some time until we get enough you and I we're gonna stay in love and everything everything everything everything...

Slow 03:31
Someday we're gonna pay the piper someday we're gonna knuckle down someday we're gonna take our coffees all to go but tonight we're all gonna get slow. Someday we're gonna meet the maker someday we're gonna feed the tree someday we'll pay those parking tickets that we owe but tonight we're all gonna get slow yeah, tonight we're all gonna get slow. I'm slow out in the warm night with my friends I'm hoping that this moment never ends. Someday we're gonna meet the maker someday we're gonna hunker down someday they'll find our frozen bodies in the snow but tonight we're all gonna get slow tonight we're all gonna get slow yeah tonight we're all gonna get slow.

about

This time the Big Ego seriously outdoes itself with an UnPop masterpiece. 11 songs beautifully produced by Jason Schneider, Ducky Carlisle & Jim Infantino. Featuring Jesse Flack on bass & Jesse Vena on Drums - guest performances by Phil Broikos, Dave Crossland, Steve Sadler, Barbara LaRonga, and a host of others. Recorded and mixed at Room 9 from Outer Space.

"While the star of the show is definitely Infantino's absurd, often poignant songwriting, the musical arrangements are what make the words soar. The melodies ultimately deposit the lyrics on your tongue, and can cause embarrassing outbreaks of spontaneous public singing."

Seven Days, Burlington, Vermont
